Pinacol Rearrangement The pinacol rearrangement was the first molecular rearrangement identified as such by early chemists. The defining example of a pinacol rearrangement is shown in the following diagram. As shown in the mechanism, from the initial diol, there is a shift of a methyl group to an adjacent carbon, and a carbonyl group is produced in the final step of the mechanism.
